Exile Pitbull |
The campaign was started after Walmart announced a promotion on its Facebook page, encouraging its parishioners to "like" the Walmart branch they want Pitbull to visit. The branch with the most likes by July 15 wins.
Spotting a window of opportunity, David Thorpe and John Hendren of online comedy site Something Awful initiated operation "Exile Pitbull" on Twitter, urging people to vote for Walmart Kodiak in Alaska, which is said to be the most remote Walmart store in the U.S.
"Pitbull is having a contest where he'll visit the local Walmart that gets the most FB Likes. [Jon Hendren] and I are sending him to Kodiak, Alaska," Thorpe tweeted.
The Kodiak Walmart had more than 41,000 "likes" Tuesday, more than six times the town's population.
"He's definitely coming to Kodiak if Kodiak wins," Walmart spokeswoman Sarah Spencer said.
Kodiak Island is about 225 miles southwest of Anchorage. It's home to the nation's largest Coast Guard base, and the island is known for its Kodiak brown bear population.
That fact wasn't lost on Pitbull, who tweeted Saturday: "I hear there's bear repellant at Kodiak, Alaska (at)walmartspecials."
