$3 Pregnancy Test |
The pregnancy test kit dispensers will be installed in the women's restroom in establishments that sell alcohol. Female customers can purchase a $3 pregnancy test kit from the vending machine with a swipe of a credit card.
The first pregnancy-test dispenser has been installed at the Pub 500 in Mankato last week, according to reports.
"How many times have you heard people say, 'oh, I found out I was pregnant,' and I didn't know I was going to get pregnant," said Jody Allen Crowe, an expert in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and founder of the non-profit organization "Healthy Brains for Children," which is devoted to preventing fetal alcohol syndrome.
"The damage starts to occur to the brain at two weeks, 18 days of a pregnancy," said Crowe.
Crowe said that his organization seeks to make pregnancy tests available "worldwide in locations where women can test before drinking alcohol rather than waiting until a month or two into the pregnancy."
He added that he hopes the dispensers allow women "to take a pregnancy test in the privacy of the restroom without having to purchase a pregnancy test over the counter. In a small community, purchasing a pregnancy test can be an embarrassing event and expose the woman to the gossip of the town."
Profits from the pregnancy test kits will go to the "Healthy Brains for Children" organization.
