James Holmes has been identified as suspect of the tragic Colorado shooting that killed 12 individuals and 38 others.

Holmes, who opened fire at the opening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora early Friday, was arrested in a nearby car park shortly after the shooting.

According to the Associated Press, Holmes was a former student at the University of Colorado Denver. He was reportedly getting a PhD in neuroscience.

On a rental application, the 24-year-old described himself as "quiet" and "easy-going."

The FBI has said Holmes is white, 6 feet and 3 inches tall, and was born Dec. 13, 1987.

According to MSNBC, Holmes is from the San Diego area, and once lived in Riverside.

A California woman who identified herself as the mother of James Holmes believes that her son is the suspect.

"You have the right person," she told ABC News.

James Holmes' only police record was a traffic ticket in 2011. The car he was driving to the theater had Tennessee plates.
