James Holmes: 'Joker' Looks Dazed In First Court Appearance (Video)

James Holmes, "The Joker," Appears In Court
James Holmes, who told the police he was "The Joker" after his arrest, looked dazed during his first court appearance on Monday.

Sitting silently in a red jailhouse jump suit and with his hair dyed bright red, Holmes appeared sleepy and seemingly inattentive, looking straight ahead and occasionally closing his eyes. He was shackled at the wrists and ankles.

When Arapahoe County District Judge William Sylvester asked Holmes a question, he remained expressionless and his attorney answered for him.

At the hearing the judge set a date of next Monday for formal charges to be filed. A public defender was appointed as his attorney.

Check out a video of Holmes during the court hearing below:

Holmes, 24, is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 in a shooting rampage at a packed midnight screening of the new Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises," in Aurora, Colorado last Friday.

Upon his arrest shortly after the shooting spree, Holmes reportedly told the police that he was "The Joker."

"It clearly looks like a deranged individual. He has his hair painted red. He said he was the Joker, obviously the enemy of Batman," said New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

Born December 13, 1987, Jame Holmes spent at least part of his childhood in San Diego, where he attended Westview High School. A yearbook showed he played soccer on the junior varsity team.

The University of California-Riverside, confirmed that a student named James Eagan Holmes, with the same date of birth, graduated with a bachelor's degree in neuroscience in 2010.

After completing his bachelor's degree, Holmes enrolled in the competitive graduate neuroscience program in June 2011.  He resigned without explanation from the program June 10, the university said on Sunday.

On a rental application, Holmes described himself as "quiet" and "easy-going."

His only police record was a traffic ticket in 2011. The car he was driving to the theater had Tennessee plates.
