Spam's 75th Birthday |
"Happy birthday to…us! On this day in 1937, the SPAM brand was born. Seventy-five years and billions of cans later, we're still going strong and we have you to thank for it. Here's to 75 years and, more importantly, to some amazing fans!," reads a wall post on Spam's Facebook page.
In celebration of Spam's 75th birthday, Hormel Foods, maker of the iconic meat product, will be honoring the community and home of the brand in Austin, Minn. with a late-month festival.
Legendary Motown group The Temptations will headline the event, dubbed as the "Spamtastic" Grand Opening Expansion, which will take place at the Hormel's Corporate Office at 1 Hormel Place on the July 28th.
A self-guided tour of the new Corporate Office North expansion and SPAM exhibits will run from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, followed by comments from Hormel President and CEO Jeff Ettinger.
Spam also celebrated its birthday through a cake making contest on Facebook. The first twenty-five fans who submitted their Spam cake creations were given a limited edition t-shirt. Check out the winners HERE.
Earlier this year, Spam introduced Sir Can-A-Lot, its first ever spokes-character, to mark its 75th year.
"The introduction of Sir Can-A-Lot provides an engaging presence that highlights the playful and down-to-earth personality that makes the SPAM brand both unique and timeless," said Nicole L. Behne, product manager of SPAMfamily of products. "The campaign features him ridding not only mealtimes of boredom, but also helping consumers 'Break the Monotony.'"
More than 122 million cans of Spam Classic sell worldwide each and every year, 90 million of them in the United States. There have been reportedly over 8 billion Spam cans consumed to date.
