I have to admit to having a soft spot for sassy Irish lesbians, but to my dismay, on her TV show, Rosie O'Donnell would go on & on about her crush on Tom Cruise with the same enthusiasm she had for Tickle Me Elmo dolls. When the "Queen of Nice" started talking politics, America changed the channel.
O'Donnell made her stage debut as Glinda the Good Witch in her 2nd grade production of The Wizard of Oz. O’ Donnell: "I wanted to be Dorothy. I was devastated." At Commack High School in Long Island, O'Donnell was voted homecoming queen, prom queen, senior class president of the class of 1980.
O'Donnell started her career doing stand-up & eventually took on impressive film roles. After she adopted her son Parker in 1995, she sought stability in The Rosie O'Donnell Show, which went on to beat Oprah Winfrey in the Emmy's race for 5 years. In 2002, O'Donnell dumped her hit show, publicly revealed she was a lesbian, & became a stay-at-home mommy with partner Kelli Carpenter.
When Scope mouthwash named Rosie O'Donnell one of America's least kissable celebrities in 1997, Listerine pledged $1,000 to charity each time she was kissed on-air. She smooched her way to more than $350,000.
In 2006, O'Donnell returned to daytime TV on ABC's The View, & stirred things up with her on-air feuds with Kelly Ripa, Donald Trump, & Bill O'Reilly. But after an on-air scrap with Elisabeth Hasselbeck, O'Donnell left the show before her contract expired.
After she broke up with Carpenter, O'Donnell moved to Chicago, so that Oprah could pass her crown over to the mouthy star in 2011 & soon after O'Donnell found love again with Michelle Rounds, whom she plans to marry. What a week for O’Donnell, Oprah dropped O’Donnell’s chat show from her OWN network & today Rosie turns 50 years old.
Rosie’s brother-Daniel O’Donnell is the first openly gay man elected to the New York State Assembly.
