Gabriela Silang 281st Birth Anniversary

Did you know that 281 years ago today, Doña Gabriela C. Silang, regarded as the "Joan of Arc of Ilocos," was born in Barrio Caniogan, Santa, Ilocos Sur? She was the first Filipina general who fought Spanish invaders in the 18th century.

She succeeded her second husband Diego in leading an independent rebel government in Northern Luzon. The groups’ goal was to ensure an independent Ilocos.

On September 10, 1763, Gabriela’s troops of 2000 fighters attacked the Spanish in Vigan. With a larger number of the Spanish troops, the 6000 men strong Spanish garrison was ready to ambush her and rout her forces, killing several members of her group. She was able to escape, alongside eight other individuals, but were caught on September 20, 1763. They were summarily hanged.

Apart from contributing to Philippine independence, Grabiela also proved that women are as well indispensable partners of in the great task of nation building.
