Naomi Watts cast as Princess Diana in new movie

Naomi Watts will be playing the role of late Princess Diana in forthcoming movie, "Caught In Flight."

The Oscar-nominated actress said in a release, "It is such an honor to be able to play this iconic role — Princess Diana was loved across the world and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen."

To be produced by Ecosse Films, the Princess Diana movie will be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel ("Downfall") and written by Stephen Jeffreys ("The Libertine"). It will reportedly focus on "the last two years of the princess’ life and charts how finding true personal happiness for the first time allowed her to evolve into a major international campaigner and humanitarian."

The staff and crew of the film are expected to begin production later this year.

Naomi Watts was last seen in "J.Edgar" and political movie "Fair Game."
