Fall Movie Preview #2...Where The Wild Things Are

Last September Maurice Sendak came out of closet at 80 years old. He had lived with his partner- psychoanalyst Eugene Glynn for 50 years before Dr Glynn’s death in 2007. Where The Wild Things Are is one of my favorite books, but I thought the idea of making it into a movie was a really terrible idea. How do you stretch a book that is ten sentences long into a feature film? Well, Mr. Sendak says that he is very happy with the result. The author hand picked Spike Jonze to adapt & direct after seeing Being John Malkovich. The effort was a decade in the making. Maurice Sendak is one of the producers & the screenplay is by Dave Eggers & Jonze. It seems an interesting choice to do a live action adaptation instead of an animated feature. The production stills, the trailer & Mr. Sendak’s endorsement have left me really wanting to see the film when it opens in October. Where The Wild Things are is on the National Library Association’s list of most frequently banned books.
