Virginia Patterson Hensley was born on this day in 1932 & she left us at 30 years old. Can you imagine if Patsy Cline had continued to record into the new century? How about a Patsy & kd lang duet? In her short life she enjoyed unprecedented crossover appeal. Is there anybody who does not like Patsy Cline? I know someone for whom the apex of pop music is Pink Floyd. He loves Patsy. I have a buddy who’s favorite band is The Clash & he has Patsy in his collection. I know a lesbian who has seen Sleater/Kinney 10 times & she loves her Patsy!
She was portrayed on screen by Jessica Lang in Sweet Dreams & by Beverly D'Angelo in Coal Miner's Daughter. Patsy Cline has a unique alto with impeccable phrasing & musicality. Her music enjoys robust sales, even today. What a legacy in such a short time: Sweet Dreams, Walkin’ After Midnight, I Fall To Pieces, Leavin’ On Your Mind, She’s Got You, & Crazy. She is truly one of the 20th century’s greatest female vocalists. I offer the Willie Nelson penned- Crazy. What a perfect piece of song writing & the perfect singer to put it over. She mentions making it to 83 in the clip... if only.
