Born On This Day- September 7th... Rocker Chick Chrissie Hynde
In 1979, I fell deeply in love with a talented artist & set designer, who would become my boyfriend & eventually my husband. I also fell deeply in love, that year, with the sound of Chrissie Hynde’s voice. Second only to my muse- Annie Lennox, Chrissie Hynde’s music, & amazing alto just really speak to me. If I was to “flip” for a woman, this is what I would have in mind (because if I am going to be with a woman, I would want her to be butch & a top). I have loved The Pretenders from the beginning & I have followed them & collected their music for 30 years. My favorite is the beautiful & haunting Isle Of View, an album of Pretenders songs done with a string quartet, for a live studio concert on A&E. The songs serve as impossibly beautiful art songs & as always with Ms. Hynde, the lyrics are crystal clear. Chrissie Hynde's bad attitude was always more refreshing than most. She has no patience for celebrity, no desire to sugarcoat her message, barely even giving us, her listeners the time of day. Chrissie is a long time vegetarian (like me) & her concern for animals endears me to her. & may I say one more time… is she not the coolest looking woman? The voice & the ennui are perfectly suited to my sensibilities.
Here she is doing, not one of her own, but an amazing cover of a song that I love written by Radiohead...listen to that voice!
