The fair-skinned child was allegedly sneaked into the tanning booth by her mother who is now facing second degree child endangerment charges.
But the 44-year-old mother, who was identified as Patricia Krentcil, denied she took her daughter Ana tanning with her.
"This whole thing has been blown out of proportion," she told the The Today Show. "I'm not going to bring my little daughter into a 90 degree bed, I mean, that's not normal."
She said her 5-year-old girl was indeed with her when she went to the tanning salon, but she let her child wait outside the booth while she was getting herself a tan.
The next day, the girl reportedly showed up in school with severe sunburn and told her friends she went tanning with her mom. Her kindergarten teacher overheard her and called the police.
However, Krentcil argues that Anna got her sunburn from playing in the yard.
In New Jersey, it is illegal for children under 14 to use tanning booths and anyone under 18 must have parental permission.
Not only that it is dangerous for children, ultraviolet lights in tanning beds can also damage DNA, causing mutations and formations of cancer cells.
