Are you a clutter person or a simplicity person? I am, without a doubt, a clutter person, albeit highly organized clutter.
Yesterday, The Husband & I had the backroom & the bedroom re-carpeted in a chocolate (my favorite color) high pile choice. Like dominos, the clearing of the 2 rooms brought change after change. We needed to empty both rooms, a task that brought me to emptying out the book cases by handling, dusting & reevaluating, & then keeping each of our hundreds of books, some of which I have owned since childhood.
We have a large collection of art/coffee table books & I collect favorite authors: Gore Vidal, Tennessee Williams, Noel Coward, Armistead Maupin, Michael Cunningham, Chuck Palahniuk, & subject matter: Art, Theatre History, Gay History, Dogs, Photography, Italy, Design.
I would organize the shelves by authors’ last names or category, but The Husband does the shelves by the visual, with artful stacks of books. Up right & horizontal, by color & size. We are both correct really, but I give in to the Husband almost all of the time. When it comes to placing objects in a space, he is simply the best.
Our sound system died last week & music is too important a part of Post Apocalyptic Bohemia to make a hasty choice for a replacement. Still, I could not live for even a day without playing music. The temporary solution was to purchase an IPod dock & enjoy the 5000 songs downloaded, only a fraction of my CD collection, on my Apple portable music device. The Husband approved of my choice & he liked the quality of the sound & design that he exalted the dock on a column. Zany.
Somehow, strangely, stupidly, spending my life savings on stuff is helping me to deal with my new life of not having a job. Retail therapy seems to do the trick of lifting any creeping depression or fear. Unemployed? Consider new carpeting, the new John Irving novel, a new gun metal colored shirt, a new music player, download some songs from ITunes. Feel a bit better? Have a whiskey & take it all in.
