Internet Doomsday Looms For Thousands, But Can Be Averted

Internet Doomsday July 9, 2012
It's Internet Doomsday on Monday!

A vicious malware will prevent infected computers from connecting to the Internet on Monday, July 9, 2012.

Known as DNSChanger Malware, the US FBI says that infected computers are redirecting unsuspecting users to a bogus web site or to interfere with that user’s online web browsing. Hackers responsible for the malware are able to retrieve personal information and passwords. which, if infected, redirects them to fraudulent web sites and will prevent them from going online on Monday.

According to the FBI, the number of computers that probably are infected is more than 277,000 worldwide, down from about 360,000 in April. About 64,000 still-infected computers are probably in the United States.

To know whether your computer is among those infected, visit this diagnostic website set up by experts from Georgia Tech: http://www.dcwg.org/.

If the screen is green, it means you’re not affected. If the screen is red, your computer is infected with the DNSChanger Malware.

Did it show a red screen? Don't worry. You can remove the malware by using latest Anti-virus/Anti-malware software such as McAfee, Symantec, Trend-Micro, F-Secure, etc.

Malware On Monday: DNSChanger Frequently Asked Questions

Malware On Monday
A vicious malware will prevent infected computers from connecting to the Internet on Monday.

Here are the some frequently asked questions about DNSChanger Malware:

1. What is the DNSChanger Malware is and what it does?

DNSChanger malware is a classified as computer Trojan (a Trojan is similar to a virus, except that it does not replicate itself, it appears legitimate but performs some illicit activity on the computer system when it is run or can allow somebody from a remote site to take control of the computer).

When you’re infected by this DNSChanger, it changes computer’s Domain Name Server (DNS) to replace the ISP’s provided good DNS servers with rogue DNS servers operated by the DNSChanger author or criminal, in order to divert traffic to unsolicited, and potentially fake/illegal sites in order to steal some personal information (such as user names, passwords and credit card numbers). Viruses and Trojans have been infecting computers almost as long as computers have been in businesses. Some are relatively harmless, while others bring systems down. DNSChanger Trojan was malicious enough to force the FBI to step in (see attached FBI info about DNSChanger).

For infected users, this could mean that their Internet won’t work after July 9.

2. Why is it July 9?

In November 2011, in the “Operation Ghost Click” (Reference 3), FBI successfully shut down the DNSChanger Botnet. According to a court order, in order to avoid the infected computers to lost connection with Internet immediately, FBI was authorized to set up a number of temporary DNS server to maintain the DNS services for the victims to solve this issue within 120 days. This order would be expired on July 9, 2012.

If FBI decides to close these temporary DNS servers as scheduled, several millions of the DNSChanger bots worldwide would not able to connect to the Internet. To properly handle this problem, we must help the victims to clean up the malware as soon as possible.

More information can be found here: http://www.dcwg.org/

3. Which gadgets are vulnerable?

The DNSChanger is targeting Windows PCs to other platforms that include the Mac OS and home routers as well; mobile devices may also be affected.

4.  How does it affect customers and how does one know if his PC or gadget has been infected?

To figure out whether you’ve been infected with DNSChanger, just visit www.dns-ok.ca. This website checks your computer settings to see if it’s infected with DNSChanger. If the screen is green, you’re not affected. If the screen is red, your computer is infected with the DNS Changer malware. Perform this check on all the computers/laptops within your household.

Please note: if computer is infected, it must be removed by July 9th, 2012, in order to avoid disruption on Internet service.

5.  What can be done to prevent it?

You can be protected by DNSChanger infection if you are using latest Anti-virus/Anti-malware software. Most commercial-grade Anti-virus software out there (like McAfee, Symantec, Trend-Micro, F-Secure, etc.) can detect and remove this DNSChanger Trojan.

Twitter Announcement: Search Functions Improved

Twitter Announcement
Twitter Search is now smarter!

On July 6, Twitter announced new improvements in its search feature that will "immediately get you closer to the things you care about."

Among them were the "search autocomplete" and  the "People you follow" search results.

Twitter's "search autocomplete" shows users the most likely terms for queries as they enter them. Users can select from the drop-down menu even before they finish typing the query.

"People you follow" search results, on the other hand, will present tweets from the people you follow that are related to your query.

"Viewing Tweets about a topic from just the people you follow is a great way to find useful information and join the conversation," it said.

In addition to the two, the popular microblogging site also now has the following features that would make users' search experience better:

Spelling corrections: If you misspell a term, we’ll automatically show results for your intended query.

Related suggestions: If you search for a topic for which people use multiple terms, we will provide relevant suggestions for terms where the majority of that conversation is happening on Twitter.

Results with real names and usernames: When you search for a name like ‘Jeremy Lin,’ you’ll see results mentioning that person’s real name and their Twitter account username.

These new features are certainly useful, aren't they?

iPhone 5 Release Date Set For August 2012, Report Claims

iPhone 5 Release Date
iPhone 5 will be released in August, sooner than market expectation, Taiwan-based China Economic News Service (CENS) reported Wednesday.

Apple is expected to place orders with Taiwan component suppliers in July in preparation for its planned launch of the iPhone 5 in August, which is aimed at cashing in on back-to-school buying at the end of the summer vacation, the report said.

"With the European debt crisis overshadowing the busy season for consumer electronics in the third quarter, Apple has decided to advance the launch of iPhone 5 to tap business opportunities," wrote Philip Liu of the CENS. "Industry insiders noted that the supply chain for iPhone 5 will begin to activate in July before expanding shipment in August — Apple has called for suppliers to speed up shipment, overstraining the status of delivery."

The report also echoed the rumored features and specifications of the upcoming iPhone 5, including a thinner body, a larger screen, stronger Siri function and major changes in the design for connection wire and connector, which will stimulate procurement by consumers.

"iPhone 5 will enter the era of 4G communications, leading to greater need for power amplifier, which will integrate with converter, in order to achieve the features of lightness and thinness. Major supplier Skyworks will score even stronger momentum in shipment," the report added.

CENS, an affiliate of the United Daily News Group,is one of Taiwan's largest newspaper conglomerates. It owns several publications including CENS Lighting, Taiwan Machinery, CENS Hardware, CENS Furniture, and Taiwan Transportation Equipment Guide.

iPad Mini Coming: 7-10 Million Units To Be Shipped This Year?

iPad Mini Coming This Fall?
iPad Mini, a 7-inch iPad, is arriving this year, according to analysts from global financial services company Barclays.

The analysts told the Business Insider that the long rumored smaller iPad, which is being referred to as the iPad Mini, will likely to be unveiled this fall.

"Following up on comments made last week, recent research still leads us to believe that Apple may be planning to add another form factor to its iPad line in the 7" range for the fall." said the Barclays analysts. "We believe that this type of product could be useful in promoting Apple's agenda in education with e-textbooks. Also, the form factor could make sense in gaming, which could become a bigger platform for Apple over time."

Citing "industry sources" Digitimes reported on Tuesday that the iPad Mini will be utilizing a new touch panel technology called the “G/F2" that allows the device to be thinner and cheaper than the previous iPads. Digitimes' sources added that "7-10 million units of the iPad Mini may be shipped this year."

iPhone 5 Rumored To Be Thinner, With Larger Screen

 iPhone 5 Concept Design (Urexsoft)
The iPhone 5 will reportedly feature a 20% thinner profile and a larger 4-inch screen. In addition, the new iPhone will sport a smaller dock connector and a scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass 2 on the front.

The report came from the Apple-focused technology blog iLounge.com which said that the measurements of the iPhone 5 are estimated at "125mm by 58.5mm by 7.4mm--a 10mm jump in height, nearly 2mm reduction in thickness, and virtually identical width."

"According to our source, Apple will make one major change to the rear casing, adding a metal panel to the central back of the new iPhone." iLounge wrote. "This panel will be flat, not curved, and metal, not ceramic."

It added that instead of the much hyped Liquid Metal, the new generation iPhone will instead feature “Gorilla Glass 2," a 2nd-gen Gorilla Glass that is thinner than the original version, yet still offer the same strength.

Liquid Metal inventor Dr. Atakan Peker also said in a recent interview that the chances of a Liquidmetal iPhone are slim as Apple is likely a long way from actually using the alloy in large scale projects.

The iLounge report also said that  the iPhone 5 will have a smaller dock connector with fewer pins.

It, however, did not mention anything about the release date of the new iPhone. Some reports suggest that it could be in June at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference, or as late as October.

Instagram Users Are Now More Than 50 Million

Instagram Users Breach 50 Million Mark
The number of Instagram users has surpassed the 50 million mark, a few weeks after Instagram was acquired by Facebook for $1 billion.

The popular photo sharing application, which started year 2012 with 15 million users, reportedly hit the 30 million mark at the start of April and 40 million by April 13, in the wake of its Facebook acquisition.

Citing data from Gramfeed, Mashable said the 50 millionth Instagram user goes by the handle "fox289."

"All we know about the user is drawn from his or her profile picture: an FC Barcelona soccer shirt. Just how many accounts are like fox289 – with no photos posted, no users followed – is something Facebook will be very interested in," it said.

Launched in October 2010, Instagram is a free photo sharing program allows users to take a photo, apply a digital filter to it, and then share it on a variety of social networking services, including Instagram's own. Previosly available only for iOs devices like iPads and iPhone, the app was recently made available to Android devices as well.

Zerg Rush Google Easter Egg Attacks Search Results

Zerg Rush Easter Egg By Google
Zerg Rush is Google's latest Easter egg which returns a search page with letter Os attacking and eating the search results.

To fight back, just click on these Os a few times and they will be killed.

After the game, a stat counter will then show your score which you can post on Google+.

According Urban Dictionary, "zerg rush" is a term used for a swarming attack, and/or winning a battle by throwing bodies and outnumbering an opponent. It originated from the popular video game Starcraft which had a tactic where you are able to rush opponents by mass producing zergs and rushing them.

Again, just type "zerg rush" on Google to see the effect of this newest Easter egg from the search giant.

If you're bored, you may also want to check out the following Google Easter eggs:

--Searching for "do a barrel roll" or "Z or R twice" will rotate the results page a full 360 degrees. This is a reference to the Nintendo video game Star Fox 64.

--Searching for "tilt" or "askew" using a Webkit based browser (such as Google Chrome, Safari, or Android/iOS built-in browsers) or a recent version of Firefox (7+), makes the page 'lean' to the right a bit. This also works when using Safari on a Mac.
--Searching for "qingming festival" returns a search page containing a stylized tree in the top right, water buffalo in the bottom right, and a jumping koi when the page is clicked.

    Tetris On MIT Building (Video)

A group of students hacked recently a building at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in order to play a Tetris game.

The hackers turned MIT's Green Building, which houses the university's Earth and Planetary Sciences department, into a giant, playable, and multi-color Tetris game by using LED lights. They used a console to move, rotate, and drop blocks.

"The game started off scrolling the words "TETRIS" and then would start into the first level." MIT wrote on its website. "As the player progressed, the second level would start with more pale colors, making it harder to identify the type of block. The third level involved the colors shifting on-screen. Upon losing the game, all of the blocks would fall to the bottom of the building."

Check out a Youtube video of the said Tetris game on MIT building below:

Liquid Metal To Be Used In iPhone 5 Case - Report

Liquid metal case for iPhone 5?
The next-generation iPhone will be housed in liquid metal, Korea-based tech site ETNews.com reported Wednesday.

Liquid metal will reportedly make the upcoming iPhone thin, light and resistant to impact.

"According to industry sources, the next flagship phones of the companies are expected to adopt unprecedented materials for their main bodies, that is, ceramic for the Galaxy S3 and liquid metal for iPhone5, both being thin, light and highly resistant to external impacts." ETNews wrote.

The report added that iPhone 5 is set to debut at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) to be held in San Francisco in June.

Developed by a California Institute of Technology research team and now marketed by the team's Liquidmetal Technologies, Inc., liquid metal is the commercial name for an alloy of titanium, zirconium, nickel, copper and other metals. It was first introduced for commercial applications in 2003 and is used for golf clubs, watches and covers of cell phones, among others.

Liquidmetal Technologies granted Apple a perpetual, exclusive license to use its technology in consumer electronics in 2010.

Liquid Metal has been used in Apple products for a number of years. The SIM card ejector tool in some first-generation iPads distributed in North America was reportedly made of Liquid Metal, and since then, it has been used in a number of other internal parts and small mechanical components.

Google Glasses To Change The Way We See (Video)

    Google glasses unveiled (Photo: Google)
Google, Inc. has revealed its long-rumored "augmented reality" glasses that offer information triggered by the wearer's location or voice. Like smartphones, the Google glasses can snap photos, initiate videochats and display directions at the sound of a user's voice.

The glasses are part of the company's "Project Glass" born in its "secret lab" called Google [x].

In a post on Google+, the search giant explains that the project is nowhere complete and that they went public to gather outside feedback.

"A group of us from Google[x] started Project Glass to build this kind of technology, one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment," Google wrote. We’re sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input. So we took a few design photos to show what this technology could look like and created a video to demonstrate what it might enable you to do."

Here is the concept video of the Google glasses:
