Battleship movie bombs |
After "John Carter," Kitsch latest film also performed poorly at the box office.
The Peter Berg-helmed action movie is estimated to have cost somewhere between $207 and $250 million to produce but reports say it only raked in roughly $50 million in the United States so far.
"Battleship," which also stars Liam Neeson and Rihanna, has, however, grossed $232.7 million globally, but funding studio and Comcast unit Universal will still be losing cash after marketing and other costs are covered.
"It is not quite the epic disaster of John Carter, but this will put a dent in Comcast's quarter," said Matthew Harrigan of Wunderlich Securities, who follows Comcast.
The studio is hoping that "Snow White and the Huntsman" would be a hit with audiences when it opens this weekend.
"John Carter," which cost over $250 million to produce, reportedly saddled Disney with a $200 million loss.
Kitsch has now officially had his shot at superstardom. He still has the Oliver Stone directed Savages to come later in the year, but perhaps we can't expect to see him headlining a blockbuster anytime soon.
