World's earthquakes since over a hundred years ago have been mapped by John Nelson of IDV Solutions.

Nelson plotted earthquakes that were 4.0 magnitude or greater that had hit Earth since 1898 on a world map. He marked each temblor in a lightning-bug hue that glows brighter with increasing magnitude.

"Here, data from NCEDC.org and the USGS and UC Berkeley have been sliced out into veneers based on magnitude, then glued onto and image that began it's life at NASA's Visual Earth and wrung into the Times projection (centered at the interesting bits)," Nelson writes.

He adds: "The result looks an awful lot like a fleet of Nickelodeon tankers spilled the world's supply of floam."

In total, Nelson was able to mark 203,186 earthquakes on the map, revealing the story of plate tectonics itself.

Nelson's previous work was a map of 56 years worth of tornadoes. He plotted each tornado's path and used brightness for its F-scale (level of intensity). He also added secondary charts for deaths and injuries and frequency by F-scale.
