Texas tornadoes leave trail of devastation |
More than a dozen of individuals were reportedly hurt but there were no major injuries and casualties that have been reported.
At least four tornadoes may have already touched down in the region. The extent of the damage was not immediately clear but initial reports indicated several homes were impacted in Arlington, Cleburne and Lancaster.
"Early assessment reports approximately 300 structures have been damaged; approximately 150 of these structures were severely damaged. At this time no fatalities have been reported," Alicia Hills-Oyedele with the city of Lancaster said in a statement.
The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, the eighth busiest in the world, canceled hundreds of flights and diverted others heading its way. More than 110 aircraft "sustained varying degrees of hail damage during the storm. Airline personnel are conducting individual aircraft assessments to determine the extent of the impact," the airport said.
A tornado watch remained in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday night for 33 counties in north-central and northeastern Texas, the National Weather Service reported.
Meteorologists said the storms were the result of a slow-moving storm system centered over northern New Mexico.
