Love her! Born in the island of St Kitts in the West Indies, Joan Armatrading grew up in Birmingham, England.
She is another of those amazing British artists that seems ignores here in the USA. In a music career spanning 4 decades she has released over 20 albums, 9 of which went Top 20 in the UK. She has been nominated for 3 Grammy awards.
She toured, along with Erasure & Rufus Wainwright, with Cyndi Lauper on her True Colors shows, promoting gay equality.
This summer, Armatrading married her longtime partner in ceremony on Lerwick, in the Shetland Islands of Scotland.
Armatrading, who has an MBE, is a pioneering female solo rock artist who started out in the early 1970s. She was hailed as Britain’s first truly successful black artist & is a considered a master guitar player. She is also the first female UK artist to be nominated for a Grammy in the blues category. Her music mixes up some soul, pop, blues & jazz styles.
Her hits have included Drop the Pilot, Me Myself I, All the Way from America & Love & Affection, a favorite of The Husband's. Another song, The Weakness in Me, has been voted the top Lesbian love song in online polls.
She has many other talents besides music, she is an academic & a BBC radio personality. She even ran her first marathon just a few weeks before her 58th birthday. The same year she received an honorary degree from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama, which she added to various other degrees.
I can't find much info about her wife, artist- Maggie Butler, who designed the artwork for her 1979 album Steppin’ Out. Armatrading turns 61 on this day.
