Capote Quote

"Life is a moderately good play
with a badly written 3rd act."

Truman Capote

Born On This Day- September 30th... Truman Capote

My mother is a very accomplished, intelligent, & serious woman, but she always has had a sly interest in show biz & celebrity gossip. She told me the details & intricate ins & outs of the Elizabeth Taylor + Eddie Fisher + Debbie Reynolds divorces & marriages when I was just 5 years old. I appreciated that she explained that one to me. I remember well, being 12 years old & my mother giving me the low down on the infamous “party of the century”- Truman Capote's Black & White Ball.

The now legendary Black & White Masked Ball was a bash that Truman Capote threw at Manhattan's Plaza Hotel on Nov. 28, 1966. The guest of honor was Katharine Graham, president of the Washington Post, but no one had any illusions; the purpose of this gala was to celebrate the host, a serious writer, but also a serious celebrity. There had never been much doubt about the celebrity part, from the moment that he styled himself as a male nymphet for his 1st novel's jacket photo; Capote had shown a rare talent for self promotion.

Frank & Mia arrive at the Black & White Ball

What had been in doubt were his literary accomplishments. As he entered his forties, the once promising young writer had produced only a few slim volumes of exquisitely written fiction & journalism. But recently In Cold Blood, a masterpiece in a new genre- the non-fiction novel & a milestone in popular culture, had buried his skeptics, & it was time to celebrate. Capote's plan was to mix & match people: titled aristocrats with intellectuals with ordinary folk from the rural Kansas county where the In Cold Blood murders had occurred. But in this respect, the party seems to have failed. Jack Dunphy, Capotes lover: "I've never seen such ghettoizing in all my life. No group mixed with another group." As for the excluded, on the cover of the next Esquire, under the title "We wouldn't have come even if you had invited us, Truman Capote" was a photo of a surly looking group comprising Kim Novak, Tony Curtis, Pat Brown, Ed Sullivan, Pierre Salinger, Lynn Redgrave & Casey Stengel.

From the moment my mother told me about the Black & White Ball, I became fascinated by Truman Capote (at 5’3’’ he was dubbed the Tiny Terror) & I went on to read everything by & about him. I was fascinated by his distinctive, high-pitched voice & odd vocal mannerisms, his offbeat manner of dress & his fabulous stories when he would appear on TV talk shows. I have everything he has written, plus biographies, diaries & books of letters. He is a member of a handful of authors that make up the club: Stephen’s Favorite Writers. He had a long standing rivalry with another of my favorites- Gore Vidal. Their rivalry prompted another member of my club- Tennessee Williams to complain: "You would think they were running neck &neck for some fabulous gold prize." I own a first edition paperback of Breakfast At Tiffany’s. I love all his work, but my very favorite is A Christmas Memory. During the holidays I always re-read it, & I set a copy out, as part of a Christmas tableau, on a table as a holiday ritual.

Capote died in LA in1984. He was 59 years old when he died of Liver Cancer & multiple drug intoxication". He died at the home of his old friend Joanne Carson, ex-wife of Johnny Carson, on whose program Capote had been a frequent guest. He was interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in LA, leaving behind his longtime companion, writer- Jack Dunphy. Dunphy died in 1992, & in 1994 both his & Capote's ashes were scattered at Crooked Pond, on Long Island, where the couple had maintained a property with individual houses for many years. Capote also had a home in Palm Springs, a condo in Switzerland that was mostly occupied by Dunphy seasonally, and a primary residence at the UN Plaza in NYC. Capote's will provided that after Dunphy's death a literary trust would be established, sustained by revenues from Capote's works, to fund various literary prizes and grants including the Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism in Memory of Newton Arvin, commemorating not only Capote but also his friend good friend Newton Arvin, a Smith College professor & critic, who lost his job after his homosexuality was exposed.

If you are not familiar with Capote try Capote: A Biography by Gerald Clarke, or Bennett Miller's 2005 film- Capote, which was nominated for 5 Academy Awards. Philip Seymore Hoffman's performance as Capote earned him many awards, including: a BAFT, a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, an Independent Spirit Award & the Oscar for Best Actor. Covering much of the same story is the film- Infamous (2006), with Toby Jones as Capote & the Harper Lee, of Miss Sandra Bullock & is an adaptation o Capote: In Which Various Friends, Enemies, Acquaintances and Detractors Recall His Turbulent Career (1997) by George Plimpton.

Words To Live By

"We need to make books cool again. If you go home with somebody & they don't have books, don't fuck them."
John Waters

Don't tell me you don't know what love is
When you're old enough to know better
When you find strange hands in your sweater
When your dreamboat turns out to be a footnote
I'm a man with a mission in 2 or 3 editions

& I'm giving you a longing look
Everyday, everyday, everyday I write the book

Chapter 1 we didn't really get along
Chapter 2 I think I fell in love with you
You said you'd stand by me in the middle
 of Chapter 3
But you were up to your old tricks in
 Chapters 4, 5 & 6

The way you walk
The way you talk, & try to kiss me, & laugh
In 4 or 5 paragraphs
All your compliments & your cutting remarks
Are captured here in my quotation marks

& I'm giving you a longing look
Everyday, everyday, everyday I write the book

Don't tell me you don't know the difference
Between a lover & a fighter
With my pen & my electric typewriter
Even in a perfect world where everyone was equal
I'd still own the film rights
& be working on the sequel

& I'm giving you a longing look
Everyday, everyday, everyday I write the book

Michael Jackson audio recording in Conrad Murray's trial shocks the world

Michael Jackson audio shocks the world
An audio recording of Michael Jackson sounding dazed and disorientated which was presented as evidence during the first day of the Dr. Conrad Murray’s manslaughter trial  has shocked many people around the world.

From the said Michael Jackson audio, the pop star can be heard discussing about his "This Is It" tour with slurred speech. It was said to have been recorded by Dr. Murray himself while the singer was drugged.

“When people leave my show,” a barely audible Jackson told Dr. Murray, “I want them to say, ‘I’ve never seen nothing like this in my life. Go. Go. I’ve never seen nothing like this. Go. It’s amazing. He’s the greatest entertainer in the world,”

The prosecutors argue that the audio recording, which was recorded about six weeks prior to the singer's death, proves that Michael Jackson's personal doctor, Dr. Murray, was doping him up on the powerful anesthetic Propofol, which led to his death. (Propofol is an anesthetic used intravenously in hospitals for patients who are about to undergo a surgical intervention.)

Deputy District Attorney David Walgren told the court, “What happened during that time frame is that the acts and omissions of Michael Jackson’s personal doctor Conrad Murray directly led to his premature death at age 50.”

He added that the singer trusted the physician, and “that misplaced trust in Conrad Murray cost Michael Jackson his life.”

Dr. Conrad Murray was charged with “involuntary manslaughter” in the trial that began on Tuesday, September 27. Dr. Murray had pleaded "not guilty" to the accusations brought to him on February 8, 2010 and was released from police custody after paying the bail amounting to 75,000 US dollars.

Check out Michael Jackson's audio recording below:

And then I met James Randi.

I met him.  Whee!  Science Author High!  He even signed in my porta-art journal, because I didn't have anything else for him to sign...  He is adorable.  He even made an adorable mistake:

He wrote "Oops" in my art journal thingy.  D'awwwWWw!
Just like when David Sedaris drew a dead dog in my book
I only had to elbow 6 mega nerds outta my way to get this signature.  Super nerds with sword-umbrellas.  Yeah.  And the guy who was mad about James Randi not calling him back 5 years ago when he wanted to prove that he was psychic or something.  Yes, that guy had to wait.  Be mean to James Randi, and you have to go to the back of the line.

His lecture was witty, informative and very entertaining.  He did magic, too.  Yeah, Readers,  inconceievable magic and when he said he was just doing a trick,  I looked at him suspiciously.  Skeptically, you could say.  That was no trick, James "Grampy" Randi.  I am convinced that he has lightning speed.  Like Santa.... In fact he is just like the Santa from "Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus", except that he would tell Virgina to get proof;  catch a flying reindeer;  go for the prize.  Hm.

He's got the moves.

D'aww!!!!

He is so passionate about science, so gracious about what he believes, he calls himself cute and handsome and he worries so much about people.  I am immediately adding him to my collection of adorable old genius men to keep forever.  The list also includes Victor Borge, BB King, Peter Faulk and Einsteiny.  You just never mind with your judgy face.

And then I told him that I want a bike and a dowsing rod.  Wait... not a dousing rod (because they are fake).
It took every ounce of will power not to raise my hand during the Q&A part and ask him if I could fold him up into a little square and keep him in my purse so that I could take him home and feed him cookies and make him be my new fill-in Grand Dad. *ahem*

Is that so weird?  Honestly, I am trying to write a serious review, but I can't get past the adorable part.

Ontario, Canada - A Toronto-area high school teacher has claimed the $21.4 Million lottery jackpot prize that he won, almost three months after the lottery date.

Craig Henshaw, 42, was not aware that he had the winning ticket for the Lotto Max draw last July 8th. He reportedly pinned the ticket to his fridge and left for Europe with his girlfriend a few days later for a vacation. He said he was counting his pennies during his Euro trip not knowing that he had millions waiting for him at home.

"I had no idea I had $21 million sitting on my fridge at home," Henshaw said after being presented with a large cheque.

"I wouldn't have been living out of a backpack for two months if I'd known (about the money)," he added.

It wasn’t until Henshaw was back teaching at school that he decided to check a stack of tickets at a grocery store. At first he thought he won $21,000 which made him quite happy. But when he talked with a lottery official on the phone who said, no, it was $21 million, he dropped the phone.

Henshaw, who teaches wood shop and technology, plans to use the money that he won to pay for his nieces' and nephew's college education and bring his girlfriend back to Europe, in style this time, and possibly to tie knot with her. He is also planning to take a year off from teaching.
